The African Union (AU) announces the deployment of its Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to the Republic of Djibouti for the presidential election scheduled to take place on 10 April 2026.

At the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Djibouti, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), His Excellency Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, following the proposal of the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (CAPPS) of the African Union (AU), His Excellency Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, approved the deployment of a short-term AUEOM to assess and report on the conduct of the presidential election scheduled for 10 April 2026.

The Mission is led by His Excellency Bernard Makuza, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Rwanda. It comprises twenty-six (26) short-term observers drawn from sixteen (16) AU Member States[1], including ambassadors accredited to the African Union in Addis Ababa, representatives of African election management bodies, members of African civil society organisations, and representatives of youth organisations.

In fulfilling its mandate, the Mission will engage with key national stakeholders, including government authorities, election management bodies, political parties, candidates, civil society organisations, and other relevant actors involved in the electoral process.

The Mission is in Djibouti, from 3 to 14 April 2026, it will deliver its Preliminary Statement on 12 April 2026 at Djibouti Palace Kempinski Hotel, at 10.30 am, presenting its initial findings and recommendations aimed at strengthening democratic governance, transparency, and the rule of law in electoral processes across the continent.
