Addis Ababa, 30 December 2013: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, is following with concern the events that took place today, 30 December 2013, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In this regard, she strongly condemns the attacks perpetrated in Kinshasa against the Ministry of Defence, the Congolese National Radio and Television and the Ndjili international airport, which resulted in fatalities, as well as the attack carried out, the same day, by armed elements in Lubumbashi. She notes that these attacks are taking place at a time when sustained efforts are being made to further dialogue among all concerned stakeholders.
The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates AU’s total rejection of any recourse to force to further any claim whatsoever. She reiterates the AU’s commitment to continue to support the Congolese authorities in their efforts to consolidate peace, security and stability throughout the country.
