Addis Ababa, June 9, 2023: The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) condemns in the strongest terms the heinous attack by the Al Shabaab terrorist organization, on the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Forward Operating Base (FOB) of Ugandan People’s Defence Forces, in Buulo Mareer, Lower Shabelle, in Somalia, on 26 May 2023, which resulted in the loss of lives and serious injuries to many others.
The PSC expresses its deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Uganda, particularly to the immediate families and friends of the deceased. The PSC wishes a speedy recovery to all those who have sustained injuries from the attack.
Furthermore, the PSC strongly condemns Al Shabaab and terrorism in all its forms and manifestation and reiterates its call to the international community to continue supporting Somalia in the fight against terrorism.
The PSC pays tribute to ATMIS Troop and Police contributing countries, and in particular, to all ATMIS men and women who have paid the ultimate price in the cause of peace in Somalia.
The PSC reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ATMIS as it accompanies Somalia to restore peace, security and stability.
