comments Bangui, 26 December 2013: The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) and Head of the African-led International Support Mission in the Central African Republic (MISCA), General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko, condemns the attack carried out yesterday, 25 December 2013, in Bangui, by unidentified armed elements, against members of the Chadian contingent of MISCA who were on patrol as part of their mandate to ensure the restoration of security and the protection of civilians. The attack resulted in the killing of six soldiers, while five others were wounded.
The Special Representative wishes to reiterate MISCA’s determination to implement its mandate, particularly with regard to the protection of the civilian population. He stresses that acts of provocation by elements seeking to undermine efforts to restore peace and security and promote reconciliation among the people of the CAR will not deter the Mission, neither will they weaken the cohesion and solidarity among contingents.
The Special Representative presents his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and to the Government of Chad, and wishes speedy recovery to the wounded.
