Djibouti, 26 March 2018: The Peace and Security Council (PSC) opened its Induction session today, 26 March 2018, in Djibouti. The opening session of the session was graced by the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Djibouti, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf. The opening ceremony was also marked by the speeches made by the Chairman of the Peace and Security Council for the month of March 2018, Ambassador Zackariaou Maiga of the Republic of Niger and the Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui.
In conformity with established practice, after each election of new members of the AU Peace and Security Council, an Induction session, led by the PSC Secretariat, is organised for them, before they take place their seat on the Council.
The Induction session affords an opportunity for the newly elected PSC members, in the presence of the re-elected members, to become conversant with the legal instruments of the AU on peace and security, within the framework of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), as well as the practices and working methods of the PSC. The Induction session will also enable the newly elected PSC members to benefit from the institutional memory of the outgoing members, as well as the contribution of the African members of the United Nations Security Council (A3) responsible for defending the views and the positions of the AU. The Induction session is also an opportunity to exchange views on the challenges to peace and security in Africa, with a view to enabling them contribute to the work of Council during their tenure.
